Abstract
Morley profiles the American conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, who was heralded as "the new Leonard Bernstein" in the 1970s. However, he was considered too unconventional by major American orchestras, and no major position was lined up for him in the United States, so Thomas spent time as a musical journeyman, and then eight years as the principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra. As a conductor and music director of the San Francisco Symphony, he has brought it and himself international recognition. This segment includes commentary by Isaac Stern, and Thomas's reminiscences about his childhood, grandmother, and both parents.
