Physical Description

Extent: 1 audiotape reel (approximately 33 min.) : acetate, two-track, 7.5 ips ; 10 in.
Sound quality is good overall in that the speakers' voices are easily intelligible. However, the interview with Walter Terry is marred by extraneous noise due to its having been recorded at a restaurant.

Abstract

Interview with Walter Terry conducted by Marian Horosko, as host, at the Russian Tea Room in New York, N.Y. (approximately 20 minutes), and interview with Ellen Berland conducted by Alvin H. Reiss (approximately 10 minutes), for broadcast on radio station WNYC-FM, New York on its series World of Dance, on July 27, 1965. Streaming file (first approximate 20 minutes). [Music and introductory remarks by unidentified speaker.] Walter Terry speaks with Marian Horosko at the Russian Tea Room in New York, N.Y., about his work as dance critic at the [now defunct] New York Herald Tribune including an anecdote about Maria Tallchief; his books, including his biography of Isadora Duncan [Isadora Duncan: her life, her art, her legacy, 1963]; the many types of dance he reviews; reviews as guides for the general theater-going public; experimental choreography; his background in dance; America Dances; maintaining his objectivity notwithstanding personal relationships; how personal knowledge of an artist can enrich a review [interview ends at approximately 19:55; Horosko introduces Alvin H. Reiss, host of the second segment of the program]. Streaming file (from approximately 20:00 to 32:55). Ellen Berland speaks with Alvin H. Reiss about the dance classes she conducts for elderly people at the 92nd Street Y; physical fitness as their objective; the content of the classes; the students including their physical problems. [The interview with Berland ends at 28:26; the remaining approximate three minutes of the recording consists of announcements, by Marian Horosko and an unidentified speaker, and music].
