Description
Fantasy landscape filled with words and symbols alluding to French and German dramatists. A large, imposing building bears on its pediment the words "Scribe & Comp.," which also appear below on a wagon drawn by a winged horse. These probably refer to the French dramatist Eugène Scribe. Wagons labeled Schroder and Kotzebue probably refer respectively to the German playwrights Friedrich Ludwig Schröder and Auguste von Kotzebue. At center, a signpost on a bridge points in opposite directions "nach Teutschland [sic]" and "nach Frankreich" ["toward Germany" and "toward France"].
