Interview with Ruth Lovell Murray conducted by Kathryn Gladney Ellis on July 6, 1971 in Detroit, Michigan, for the archives of the Dance Division of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 45 minutes). Ruth Lovell Murray speaks with Kathryn Gladney Ellis about her background in dance; her training as a teacher; her philosophy of teaching including the encouraging of personal creativity; her study of dance, including at the Humphrey-Weidman studio in New York and at Bennington [Bennington College Summer School of the Dance]; her meager performing career; her immediate affinity for the work of Doris Humphrey, Martha Graham and other modern dance choreographers; trends in dance including movement education for children and the greater use of improvisation; teaching composition; rhythmic training [ends abruptly]. Ruth Lovell Murray speaks with Kathryn Gladney Ellis about teaching dance and the qualities she hopes to see in her students; the importance of performance experience for the dance student; the students today as compared with those in the past; changes she would like to see including greater opportunities for male dance students; her concerns about the "slickness" she sees in many current dance productions; the place of dance in the departmental organization of an academic institution.
