Biographical/historical: Female ballet dancers of the nineteenth century were not noted for prudishness. French artists, among them Edgar Degas and a host of caricaturists, frequently depicted the interactions between female dancers and their more affluent upper-class patrons. This print is in the same vein, though its glimpse of nudity and the man's leer make it more frankly salacious than usual.

Extent: 1 print : lithograph, b&w ; 29 x 35 cm.
Description
Depiction of four female ballet dancers in their dressing room. A particularly conscientious dancer practices a dance movement with a wreath in front of a cheval glass; the others are more at leisure, among them a woman who reclines with loosened hair and a bared breast. A bearded man leers at the scene from behind the draperies at far left.
