Abstract
British choreographer Wayne McGregor revisits the territory of some groundbreaking modern dance choreographers who are or were active in New York: Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, Paul Taylor, the Judson Church group (among them David Gordon, Valda Setterfield, and Trisha Brown), and Twyla Tharp. Interviewing the choreographers themselves or members of their dance companies, he explores their contributions, their significance as innovators, and the special qualities that distinguish them from each other. Film and video clips provide glimpses of each choreographer and his or her company in action. McGregor's journey also includes a brief visit to Dance Division of The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, repository of much of this history.
