Description
Interview with Mikhail Baryshnikov conducted by Walter Terry in 1976, as research for his book: Great male dancers of the ballet (Garden City, NY: Anchor Books, 1978). The location of the interview is not identified. An unidentified interpreter assists at times. Streaming audio file (approximately 28 minutes). Walter Terry speaks about his book (Great male dancers of the ballet, 1978); Mikhail Baryshnikov, with the occasional assistance of an unidentified interpreter, speaks about dancing in John Butler's Medea including the difficulty of preparing for a modern role; differences between dancing a classical role and a modern role; his interest in a wide variety of dance styles; the continuing evolution of how he dances classical roles like Albrecht; the use of classical steps to express dramatic meaning, for example Albrecht's steps when dancing for the Queen of the Willis; (briefly) several choreographers with whom he has worked; his interest in dancing a ballet about Mozart; his admiration for George Balanchine's ballets.
