Description
British government document, for the abolition of slavery in the Colonies. The act contains a provision that all slaves above the age of six were to present themselves for apprenticeship. The crown also set aside twenty million pounds to compensate the slave owners, who could retain their workforce for a modest sum. "Copy of Order in council, declaring that adequate and satisfactory provision has been made by law, in the island of Jamaica, for giving effect to an Act of Parliament ... for the abolition of slavery in the colonies ... At the Court of Saint James's, the 19th of March 1834"; signed: C.C. Greville.
