Notes

Content: Typed on mount: "The militiamen shown here may be considered typical of the country at large. Each man has (or should have) his 'good musket or firelock, a sufficient bayonet,' and all other paraphernalia required of him by law. The scene is laid at one of the three or four annual drills which were about as effective as the picnics they resembled. No uniforms were provided; the few suggested in the plate represent relics of some former war or service in a Volunteer company. Only the wealthier officers possessed real martial dress."
