Funding: Digitization was made possible by a lead gift from The Polonsky Foundation.
Content: This is an incomplete manuscript draft of the first Constitution of the State of New York, including sections on voting procedures, election or appointment of state officials, duties of the governor and lieutenant governor, pardons and impeachment, and other matters. The document (18 pages on 9 leaves) is paginated 11-16, 17-18 (four pages numbered on rectos only), 22-29. The handwriting on pages 11 through part of 15, and parts of pages 25 and 26, is unidentified; the remainder, as well as the pagination, is in Yates' handwriting. The text bears only a few revisions. The draft can be dated to early 1777 based on published sources.
Content: This document was initially numbered 224, with a supplied date of 1788. It was removed to this location with a revised date of 1777 prior to early microfilming.
Citation/reference: The final draft from which the Constitution was printed is held at the New York State Archives (New York State. Secretary of State. First Constitution of the State of New York, 1777.) Digital images are available online, with suggested resources. See Charles Z. Lincoln,
