Description
The 2 hour program starts with June LeBell, sitting in for Robert Sherman, the regular host of this program, asking H.C. Robbins Landon, a celebrated musicologist, broadcaster and one of the most informed experts on the lives and works of Haydn and Mozart, to share some of his knowledge. The works of the same genre by both composers are played in order to illustrate similarities and differences of their style and temperament expressed in their music. Gerard Schwarz, an American conductor, in New York for the annual Mostly Mozart festival, participates in the analysis. Violinist Elmar Oliveira, also in town with scheduled concerts at the Mostly Mozart festival, joins in after Landon and Schwarz depart, and LeBelle questions him about the composer Barber, violin as an instrument made by famous violin makers, the fascinating story about the purchase of his Stradivarius violin, his hobbies (collecting antiques and browsing in antique shops), and more.
