Biographical/historical: The ballet extravaganza Excelsior (choreography and libretto, Luigi Manzotti; music, Romualdo Marenco; costumes, Alfredo Edel) was first performed at the Teatro alla Scala, Milan, in 1881, and became an immediate hit, with numerous revivals both in Italy and abroad. These prints commemorate the ballet's first Parisian performances, which inaugurated the newly constructed Éden Théâtre (now the site of the Théâtre de l'Athénée) in January 1883.
Biographical/historical: Draner was the pseudonym of the artist Jules Renard, a Belgian-born painter, illustrator, and caricaturist who also worked as a stage designer for various European theatres.

Extent: 2 prints (1 sheet) : lithograph, color or black and white ; 38 x 54 cm. or smaller.
Description
Two leaves from the Parisian journal La Caricature of May 1883. On the recto is the journal's cover, with a color illustration headed "Excelsior, L'Eden-Theatre, par Draner," and signed at lower right "[Charles?] Fernique sc." On the verso is a double-page spread titled "Quelques costumes du ballet 'Excelsior,' par Draner." This b&w composite drawing depicts twenty-seven labeled figures, some partially obscured, from the Ballet des Nations which took place in Excelsior's penultimate scene. Appropriately, many of the images represent national or ethnic costumes, but characters such as Electricité, La Lumière, La Valeur, and Le Commerce are also included.
