Abstract

Videotaped at two consecutive sessions, both titled The heritage of Isadora Duncan, on April 9, 1981 by Hilary Harris. The first session (approx. 36 min.) is a lecture-demonstration by Maria Theresa Duncan. For another recording of this session, see: *MGZIDF 3548 (formerly *MGZIC 9-950 cassette 45). The second (approx. 30 min. total) is a panel discussion between Elizabeth Kendall (moderator), Kay Bardsley, and Julia Levien. For another recording of this session, see: *MGZIDF 3546 (formerly *MGZIC 9-950 cassette 43). CONTENTS: Cassette 8 (approx. 58 min. total): Introduction by Patricia Kerr Ross. -- Elizabeth Kendall introduces Maria Theresa Duncan. -- Solo performed by Maria Theresa Duncan to an excerpt from Tchaikovsky's Symphony no. 6. -- Lecture by Maria Theresa Duncan, who begins by discussing Isadora Duncan and her cultural milieu, then reminisces about her own experiences as a member of the Isadorables and later as an independent performer. Bardsley and Levien recall their studies of Duncan dancing with, respectively, Maria Theresa Duncan, and Anna Duncan and Irma Duncan. They compare the different methodologies of the three teachers, all of whom drew upon the technique developed by Elizabeth Duncan, and the stylistic differences that have evolved in Europe and the U.S. Levien comments upon the choreography in the film The loves of Isadora, and notes Isadora's great achievement in changing dance from entertainment to an art experience. She and Bardsley describe some special qualities of Duncan dancing, particularly its fluidity and phrasing, and its sense of humanism.
