Lecture on August Bournonville given by Walter Terry, in July 1979 at the University of North Carolina on the occasion of the centenary of Bournonville's death. Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 38 minutes). [Introduction by unidentified speaker of Walter Terry.] Walter Terry speaks about the origins of ballet and its development; August Bournonville's family background, early life, and training; Bournonville's unique status as a choreographer with links to both the classical and the romantic ages of ballet; the characteristics of his ballets including significant roles for male dancers; the upcoming performances by dancers from the Royal Danish Ballet [Kongelige Danske ballet]; an anecdote about Bournonville's work Polka militaire and Hans Beck; the Danish royal family's patronage of the Royal Danish Ballet including an anecdote about KIng Frederick [IX]; an anecdote about Queen Elizabeth II and the Royal Danish Ballet; the influence of Bournonville technique on the technique taught in St. Petersburg and on George Balanchine and the New York City Ballet. Terry describes some very early films that were made of the Royal Danish Ballet and their restoration including the addition of sound; the remaining approximate two minutes of the streaming file consists of static and music from the soundtrack of a film of the "Jockey dance" from Bournonville's' ballet From Siberia to Moscow [Fra Siberien til Moskow] as it is shown to the audience.
