Biographical/historical: Held in June 1662, Le Grand Carrousel was a three-day series of entertainments organized by Louis XIV of France to celebrate the birth of the dauphin. Its noble participants were divided into five quadrilles named after national groups selected for their prestige or exoticism: Romans (led by the king himself), Persians, Turks, Indians, and Native Americans. The riders and horses in each group were elaborately costumed, and the festivities, often accompanied by music, allowed them to show off their horsemanship in processions, pageants, and games of skill.
Biographical/historical: Double-page plate from Courses de testes et de bague faittes par le roy et par les princes et seigneurs de sa cour, en l'année 1662. The book, commissioned by Louis XIV, included text by Charles Perrault (best remembered for his fairy tales) and illustrations by Israël Silvestre and François Chaveau.
