Abstract
Phosphorus was a personification of morning twilight, identified with the appearance of the planet Venus just before dawn. Hesperus was just the opposite, an allegory of evening twilight symbolized by the planet Venus seen just after sunset. Pitho was the goddess of persuasion and a daughter of Venus. Iris symbolically joined heaven and earth when she appeared in her form of a rainbow. Two dolphins leap from the water beneath Venus' swan.
