Abstract

Interview with Patricia Wilde conducted by John Gruen on January 13, 1978, in New York City, as research for his book, Erik Bruhn: danseur noble (Viking Press, New York, 1979). Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 46 minutes). Patricia Wilde speaks with John Gruen about Erik Bruhn during his time at New York City Ballet; Bruhn in George Balanchine's Preludios para percusión (one of the ballets comprising Panamerica); an anecdote about rehearsing Balanchine's Symphony in C with Bruhn; Balanchine's attitude towards Bruhn; Bruhn as a partner, for example in Balanchine's Divertimento no. 15; the respective experiences of André Eglevsky and Peter Martins at the company compared to that of Bruhn; more on Preludios para percusión; the American Ballet Theatre tour in Russia [the former Soviet Union] including the relationship between Bruhn and Maria Tallchief; Gruen speaks about Tallchief's introducing Rudolf Nureyev to Bruhn; Wilde continues to speak about Tallchief's behavior on the American Ballet Theatre tour; Tallchief's partnership with Bruhn on stage; working with the Royal Swedish Ballet [Kungliga Baletten (Stockholm, Sweden)]; [ends abruptly but continues on streaming audio file 2].
