Biographical/historical: The Spanish dancer Carmencita was born Carmen Dauset in 1868, and performed in variety shows and music halls. She appears in paintings by the eminent American artists John Singer Sargent and William Merritt Chase. As the subject of the film Carmencita (1894), produced and directed by William K.L. Dickson under the auspices of Thomas Edison's manufacturing company, she was the first woman to appear before an Edison motion picture camera.
