Biographical/Historical: Louis Henry, born in France, spent most of his career in Italy. His ballet La festa da ballo in maschera, the subject and bone of contention of this print, was first presented at La Scala, Milan, in 1829. This ballet and Auber's opera both were apparently based on the same historical event, the attempt to assassinate Gustavus III, king of Sweden, at a masked ball in 1792. This story is probably most familiar today through Giuseppe Verdi's opera Un ballo in maschera (1859).

Abstract

The central section of this print is crammed with figures dressed in fanciful costumes for a masquerade, gathered in a ballroom under two chandeliers. This scene is framed on three sides by a procession of additional costumed figures. A long paragraph below the title accuses the choreographer Filippo Taglioni (father of the famous ballerina Marie Taglioni) of plagiarizing choreography by Louis Henry, including the dances in the masked ball from Daniel Auber's opera Gustave III, produced at the Paris Opéra in 1833.
