Abstract

Interview with Ted Kivitt conducted by John Gruen, as host, for broadcast on January 26, 1976 by radio station WNCN-FM, New York on its series The sound of dance. Streaming audio file (approximately 58 minutes). John Gruen, host, speaks about two George Balanchine premieres:The steadfast tin soldier and Chaconne; Gruen introduces his guest Ted Kivitt; Kivitt speaks about his background including how he first began to study dance; his early career; dancing with American Ballet Theatre including the changes over the years in the company and the public's expectations of male dancers [a recording of music by Daniel François Auber used in Victor Gsovsky's ballet Grand pas classique is played; commercial announcements follow]; Gruen and Kivitt speak further about Kivitt's career at American Ballet Theatre including an anecdote about his dancing an encore, as it were, with Eleanor D'Antuono; the effect of the guest artist system, including defectors from the [former] Soviet Union, on the company; Cynthia Gregory; his own dancing including as a character dancer; his marriage and dance partnership with Karena Brock; his partnering of Natalia Makarova; dancing with Carla Fracci; Toni Lander [a recording of music by Giacomo Meyerbeer used in Frederick Ashton's ballet Les patineurs is played; commercial announcements follow]; Kivitt speaks about his hopes regarding his future at American Ballet Theatre [Gruen's closing remarks; music; ends abruptly].
