Biographical/historical: Louis Angely's one-act musical theatre work, sometimes described as a Singspiel or a vaudeville, was first presented in Berlin, ca. 1830. It depicted a convivial gathering of the craftsmen or journeymen of the title. It won great success for Angely, a German actor, director and playwright who specialized in Possen or farces, who was also acclaimed for performing its leading role, the foreman Kluck.
