Notes
Biographical/historical: Accompanying information from the dealer Paul McCarron identifies this scene as a birthday celebration held in the Raphael Room at the Berlinischer Künstler-Verein on Jan. 19, 1822. The celebration took the form of a tableau vivant that poked fun at the low artistic standards of the court of Louis XIV. The seated man in the foreground is identified as seventeen-year-old Louis Schneider, playing a Savoyard, who spoke verses in a mixture of German and French, composed by Schadow as a commentary on the scene. The Duke and Duchess de Roquelaure stand at foreground center; on either side of them are courtiers, military men, and a man costumed as Arlecchino or Harlequin. At the top of the steps the couple's daughter, costumed as a shepherdess, dances a duet with a French dancing master; at right the couple's son, dressed as a shepherd complete with crook, dances beside a violinist. At left is a trio of commedia dell'arte characters: Scaramuccia [Scaramouche], Pierrot, and Pantalone.
