Sound quality is very good with respect to the panelists, but the audibility of the audience members who speak varies. Streaming audio file 2 is marred by extraneous noise.
Description
Dance Critics Association Conference on the topic of professionalism, held at the Piccadilly Hotel, New York City on January 6, 1978. Panelists include Marcia Siegel (moderator), Tobi Tobias, Nancy Goldner, Doris Hering, and Alan Kriegsman. Writers speaking from the audience (audibility variable) include Herbert Simpson, Iris Fangor, Deborah Jowitt, Robert Pierce, and Ernestine Stodelle. Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 55 minutes). Panel discussion of professionalism in dance criticism. Marcia B. Siegel, the moderator, introduces the panel members: Doris Hering, Tobi Tobias, Alan Kriegsman, and Nancy Goldner. Topics discussed include the primary role and function of the critic; whether the type of publication for which one writes influences what is written; the pressures exerted by editors, choreographers, and sponsoring institutions; whether one should be concerned with the possible effect of reviews on dance funding; the effects of criticism on the ticket-buying public. This session is devoted almost entirely to a discussion of ethics, particularly concerning conflicts of interest.
