Description
Talk on the Dutch National Ballet by Rudi van Dantzig at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center in New York City, on October 25, 1976. Streaming audio file (approximately 33 minutes). [Introduction of Rudi van Dantzig.] Rudi van Dantzig speaks about the Dutch National Ballet [Nationale Ballet (Netherlands)] and its repertoire; the financial support of the national government and the requirement that the company tour domestically; the North American tour and the nature of the repertoire to be performed; the choreographers Hans van Manen and Toer van Schayk; Sonia Gaskell and her contribution to dance in the Netherlands; the film [The making of a ballet, Rudi van Dantzig, a choreographer and his world, 1973] to be shown; in response to questions from the audience, Van Dantzig speaks about the composition of the company; dance training in the Netherlands; the music heard in the film; the works by George Balanchine in the company's repertoire; the complete dependence of the company financially on government support and the correspondingly low price of tickets; the difficulties faced by young choreographers; the relatively non-hierarchical structure of the company; his choreographic method; works by Balanchine he would like to see the company perform; the use of video films to learn and rehearse ballets; the commissioning of the film by the Netherlands government; his ballet Painted birds.
