Additional title: Standard portrait--This is the Athenaeum Head by Gilbert Stuart. It has been said that if Washington returned to earth and resembled this ubiquitous portrait less closely than obscurer likenesses, he would be called an imposter. He was 64 when it was done. Done from life--portraits Washington sat for. Soldier--This black-lead drawing by Pierre Eugène Du Simitière, a Swiss itinerant museum keeper, gives the best vision of Washington the commander. Age 46. Victor--William Dunlap's pastel shows Washington after the Revolution and before he had become deeply embroiled in problems of statecraft. Age 51. Hero--The bust by Jean Antoine Houdon seems to have lost much of Washington's real personality in favor of a likeness of traditional nobility. Age 53. Life mask--Taken by Houdon, this likeness is not necessarily the most accurate, since flesh is compressible, and expressions change under plaster. Age 53. Troubled president--Rembrandt Peale kept this portrait of a harried man and sold bowdlerized versions that were characterless and routine. Age 63. Seasoned president--James Sharples, an Englishman, did this gentle melancholy profile which hung in Mount Vernon, where it was a favorite. Age 64.
