Biographical/historical: The dancer-choreographer Jules Perrot was a member of the ballet company of the Académie Royale de Musique, or Paris Opéra, from 1830-1835 and in 1849. Filippo Taglioni's ballet Nathalie, ou la laitière suisse was originally created in Vienna in 1821, and staged at the Opéra in 1832. Perrot did not dance a named role, but he was listed among the ensemble in a review in Le Constitutionel of Nov. 9, 1832, quoted by Cyril Beaumont in his Complete book of ballets (1938). He appears in the costume depicted in this print, dancing with Pauline Leroux, in a drawing by Le Faget, reproduced in Ivor Guest's Jules Perrot: master of the Romantic ballet (1984).
