Sound quality is fair. John Gruen's voice is very soft and often difficult to understand. Erik Bruhn's voice is also soft but almost always intelligible.
Abstract
Interview with Erik Bruhn conducted by John Gruen as research for his book Erik Bruhn: danseur noble (1979), in Copenhagen, Denmark, on July 21, 1977. This is Part 7 of an 18-part series. However, there is no audio for parts 2 and 10, which are available only as edited transcripts. Streaming file 1 (approximately 46 minutes). Erik Bruhn speaks with John Gruen about Rudolf Nureyev including an anecdote about their learning to drive together in London, England; his three months in Australia; Sonia Arova including her marriage; Lucia Chase and his return to American Ballet Theatre, with Carla Fracci; dancing Giselle with Yvette Chauviré in 1964 including Nureyev's response to the performance; touring in Europe with the Harkness Ballet including his impressions of Rebekah Harkness [short gap]; his recurring illness [ends abruptly but continues on streaming file 2]. Streaming file 2 (approximately 45 minutes). Erik Bruhn speaks with John Gruen about his stomach ulcer; dancing with Carla Fracci; his impressions of Antony Tudor; some of his partners at American Ballet Theatre; Gentele Goeran and the Royal Swedish Ballet [Kungliga Baletten] including how Bruhn came to be its director; the struggle to reform the company and school; his reasons for leaving and the company's reversion to its former state; Marit [Gentele] [ends abruptly].
