Content: From The New-York Magazine; or Literary Repository, January 1795. vol. 6, opp. p. 1.
Content: Originally intended as a residence for the president of the United States, but before it was completd the federal government was moved to Philadelphia, and the residence was used to house the governors of New York State. It was renamed the Custom House in 1799, and was eventually demolished in 1815. Six years prior to that date, it served as the second home of the New-York Historical Society.
