Content: Deposited by Yale University, 1893. This apparatus was operated with two small cells of battery and used for determining the lifting power of the magnet, which is between 2,000 and 3,000 pounds. The original platform extended about two feet beyond the frame to allow several men to stand on it, while the iron weights, aggregating 550 pounds, were placed in the middle. The long iron lever was used to raise the loaded platform and bring the armature up to the poles of the magnet. Detailed description of the apparatus and account of the experiments made with it are printed in the "Scientific Writings of Joseph Henry," published by the Smithsonian Institution, 1886, volume I, pages 50-53.
