Notes
Content: At present, two drift openings serve the tipple. In the near future, another drift will be driven. The coal outcrops along a hillside fronting on the Conemaugh River below Johnstown. The track in the extreme left leads to the other opening. Trips from drift no. 2 are backed into the loaded tracks leading to the tipple, thus permitting two different trips to be coupled together for removal to the preparator by the trip feeder. When the vein is above the surface opening so that loaded cars can run by gravity downhill toward the outside world the mine is called a "drift mine." A straight passage from the surface to a vein gives rise to the term "tunnel mine."
