Content: 2854 [typewritten on reverse of photo] This view shows a W-S-M lifting type car dumper on the docks of the Pennsylvania R.R. at Sandusky, Ohio. The cradle, containing car to be dumped, is elevated before being overturned. The coal is emptied into an adjustable apron and chute which are so designed as to load the coal into boats with a minimum of breakage. A variation of this type of machine is to be found at the coke plant of the Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co., where cars are lifted about 62 feet before discharging into bins. The Wellman-Seaver-Morgan Co., Cleveland, O. [typewritten on separate paper] (49) Since one-way traffic does not pay the boats that carry ore eastward return loaded with coal. The same kind of mass methods are used for loading coal as are employed for unloading ore. This picture shows one of the machines that pick up a loaded coal car bodily, toss it up in the air, turn it upside down, spill its contents into the boat and return the car to its track.
