Notes
Content: 2701 [typewritten on separate paper] (48) Inside the boat hand shovellers used to gather the loose ore not caught by the unloaders bucket. The modern practice is to put a machine on this job too. The mechanism scrapes all loose ore toward the unloader's bucket. All these mighty machines are required not alone because the steel furnaces are so voracious but for the reason that the ore must cross the lakes, and the latter are closed to navigation during the winter. In the open season therefore a whole year's supply of ore must be brought to the lower lake ports.
