Content: VII 26 3. Scene from The World Struggle for Oil, a motion picture produced under the direction of the United States Department of the Interior (Bureau of Mines), Sinclair Consolidated Corporation cooperating. Immediately following the bringing in of the Drake well in 1859, there was a great rush to secure oil leases up and down Oil Creek. Equipment for drilling was not only scarce but costly and far beyond the reach of many producers. However, with the courage of frontiersmen many of the pioneers rigged up a device called a spring pole and drilled wells from 500 to 600 feet deep by foot power.
