Abbot was launched on April 13, 1944 at the Permanente Metals Corporation Shipyard No. 2 at Richmond, Calif.; the ship, honoring the founder The Chicago Defender, was the third name for a noted Negro editor and publisher; Photo shows liberty ship sliding down the way to San Francisco Bay amid thrill blasts of horns and cheers of launching guests."
