Content: Printed on border: "Soldiers have to be content with very rude toilet facilities. Pitchers and basins are used only by the officers, and seldom by them, for baggage in the army in the field must be kept down to the minimum. It is a lucky body of men who find a running stream close to their encampment, and the morning wash is often a luxury during a campaign. The need of cleanliness, though, is recognized, not only from the standpoint of comfort, but on sanitary principles; and officers, particularly those of the medical corps, always strive to furnish their men with opportunities for bathing. The most frequent means of washing consists of camp buckets, etc., filled with water, these serving the purposes of basins and tubs. Whenever the troops halt by a river or stream, all that can be spared are permitted to take a swim, and are sometimes ordered to do so. On the march it is particularly desirable to bathe the feet often, thus lessening the liability to footsoreness."
