Description
“Attack on a (fortified) place, from Abu Simbel”. This is an example of an iconic scene which Egyptian pharaohs had sculpted and painted on and in their temples and tombs, the king victorious in war over foreign enemies. In this case the Pharaoh is Ramses II. The king stands in his chariot, firing volleys of arrows from his bow and filling the defenders of the enemy city with arrows. The rest of the monarch’s chariot force follows behind, taking courage from their l master, while a royal vulture, symbol of protection and victory, flies overhead. Even the man fleeing with his cattle in the lower left corner will be captured or killed, hinting at the spoils won by successful conquest. This is a symbolic scene as much as a depiction of any specific event, standing for the ascendancy of Pharaoh, and the righteousness he represents, over Egypt’s enemies.
