Description
A Roman army (marching left to right) crosses a river via a pontoon bridge of planks laid across boats moored side-by-side. First come the cavalry to scout the route ahead. Next are trumpeters carrying long coiled horns used to pass signals during battle. Behind them come standard bearers in animal-skin headdresses holding the ensigns and standards of the army’s legions, hung with disks and topped with insignia. At the end comes the biggest section of the army (though not pictured in this scene), columns of marching Roman soldiers, carrying their gear on t-shaped sticks held over the shoulder. Marius, a Roman general and consul from the days of the Republic, thought that Roman armies shouldn’t be burdened with long, slow supply trains made up of animal-pulled wagons. He decreed that legionaries should each personally carry most of their own equipment, leading to Roman soldiers referring to themselves as “Marius’ mules”, but also making Roman armies faster and more mobile than most of their opponents.
