Content: Printed on border: "A curious sight may be observed by travellers in the prairies of North America, namely agglomerations of miniature hills which are the dwelling-places of the prairie dogs. But prairie dogs do not like to feel lonely, and, as is shown above by a clever artist, the prairie owl and the rattlesnake are their harmless companions. It might have been supposed that the owl and rattlesnake, who live, to a certain extent, on vermin, would be deadly enemies of the feeble prairie dog, but here are facts which remove all doubts. ... Washington Irving, who travelled in the prairies in 1832, asserts that he has been an eye-witness of scenes such as are depicted above." Includes additional text.
