Content: Zeus repopulates the island of Aegina by turning ants into humans. His wife, Hera, had sent a plague on the inhabitants to punish them for favoring one of her rivals. The stricken king, shown at right, appealed to Zeus for help. The resulting humans became known as Myrmidons.
Content: Printed on border: "Formicae in homines mutatae." Written on border: "After the plague of Aegina, ants are turned into human beings. 'Metamorphoses' by Ovid (Book 7). Engr. after J. W. Baur, 17th cen." Includes additional text in German.
