Description
Depiction of Hadrian's Wall, built by the Romans between 122-128 A.D. across northern England to stop attacks by Pictish tribes from Scotland. Some of the Wall's towers had gates where customs duties could be collected from traders moving along the roads which passed through them. In the foreground, native Britons work on building the Wall, lifting stones to the top and putting them into place. Behind them, Roman soldiers are being shot at by enemy archers (note the arrow in the soldier's shield). A Roman bowman returns the fire, while a trumpeter in a wolf-skin sounds an alarm. Inside the Wall, Roman legionaries prepare to march out against the attackers, their commander on his horse at their head. A catapult can be seen in the middle distance on the left. In the background at left, the Wall continues over the hills into the distance.
