Description
Printed under each picture is "Musée de Saint-Germain" [Now the National Museum of Archaeology in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France]. The top picture shows a "carroballista", or ballista mounted on a cart. A ballista was a huge torsion-powered crossbow which shot large wooden darts. This one is mounted on a wheeled carriage, so that it could be moved about a battlefield as needed, rather than just used from one place as a siege weapon. The bottom picture shows a small catapult. Note the pad for stopping the arm's forward motion, the long handles for cranking the arm back into firing position, and the ball-shaped missile (cast in metal or chipped from stone) in the sling.
