Content: Aegeus, king of Athens (probably the figure at left) sent the hero Theseus to kill a wild bull living in the region of Marathon. The bull had been brought from Crete by Herakles and, over time, had become a terror to the lands where it rampaged. Aegeus thought that the bull would kill Theseus, and he was amazed when the hero not only subdued the beast, but brought it back alive to Athens for the king to sacrifice to the gods. The hero's triumphant return with the bull is depicted here. Aegeus later proved to be Theseus' father.
