Extent: 47 x 34 cm
Description
The structure in the center of the painting is a "naiskos", a sort of small temple built as a monument to a dead person, rather like a modern grave stone. A naiskos often contained a bust or sculpture of the memorialized person, although the one portrayed here contains a pattern of stylized flowers. The woman on the left holds a mirror and a box with a hinged lid, while the man at right carries a crown and a "bandelette", a sort of girdle or belt often seen being held by persons making offerings in Greek paintings.
