Content: Title and date from Library of Congress.
Content: "General Caption #15" attached to verso: "These white strawberry pickers living near Hammond and Ponchatoula, Louisiana, were true migrants in that they had no permanent homes and followed the berry trail the year around. They picked berries in Michigan, thence to Florida, to Louisiana to Kentucky, Tennessee and Arkansas, then to Illinois and back to Michigan. Most of these people came from farms in Oklahoma and Arkansas, however, some of them had been engaged in business in the smaller agricultural towns. The businesses included such things as grocery stores and mechanic shops and there was one commercial artist. The two young couples who are shown with their babies had never done any work other than this migratory berry picking. One group was living in their tents and trailers in a grove of pine trees just out of Hammond. The other group were living in the crude houses which nearly every grower throughout the strawberry section of Louisiana provides for the pickers. As one of the migrants said, 'It at least gets us up off the ground'. Few of these families carried bed springs along with them visiting the local dumps near their camps to get old automobile springs to use for beds. Their personal and household equipment was the usual makeshift wornout sort that all migrants have. None of the children encountered in these groups attended school; rather, they were expert berry pickers often contributing more to the family income than the parents. The pregnant woman holding a young child was expecting her new baby within the week. She had no medical attention during the pregnancy and there were no provisions made for the delivery and care of the child. Some of the other migrant women were to deliver the baby. It is not unusual to find young boys who are not relatives traveling with the family units."
