Description
Interview with Norma McLain Stoop conducted by John Gruen, as host, for broadcast on January 19, 1976 by radio station WNCN-FM, New York on its series The sound of dance. Streaming audio file (approximately 59 minutes). John Gruen, host, introduces his guest Norma McLain Stoop; Stoop and Gruen speak about ballroom dancing, including its popularity worldwide; the qualifications of a professional ballroom dancer, in the United States and in Europe; technique [a recording of tango music is played]; Stoop and Gruen speak about tango dancing; the incorporation of music and steps associated with ballroom dancing into choreography created for ballet companies; Maurice Béjart and his Ballet du XXe Siècle including the company's poor critical reception and its very favorable public reception; Béjart's penchant for theatricality and large, unusual venues [a recording of music by Ray Barretto, titled Mercy, mercy, baby, is played]; Stoop speaks further about ballroom dancing including teaching; the increasing interest in ballroom dancing in the United States; her personal life [commercial announcement]; photographing dance performances including as compared to photographing rehearsals; Stoop's background; the upcoming visits of the Royal Ballet and the Royal Danish Ballet [commercial announcements]; Stoop and Gruen speak further about the Royal Danish Ballet; the inaugural program, on the Joffrey Ballet, of the television series, Dance in America [a recording of guitar music titled La playa is played]; Gruen and Stoop speak about the Anna Pavlova issue of Dance Magazine [commercial announcement by Oscar Buhler is followed by Gruen's closing remarks; music; Buhler's closing announcement].
