Extent: 1 audiotape reel (approximately 2 hr., 13 min.) : polyester, half-track, 1.875 ips. ; 5 in.
Sound quality is fair. The recording is marred by extraneous noise, and the questions and comments from the audience are often soft and difficult to understand. However, for the most part, the panelists' voices are easily intelligible.

Abstract

What is means to be a dancer: One generation to another: a panel discussion held on February 10, 1975; sponsored by Dance Theater Workshop and New York University School of the Arts. Jeff Duncan acts as moderator; other panelists include Stuart Hodes, Anna Sokolow, Valerie Bettis, Daniel Nagrin, and Charles Weidman. There is substantial participation from the audience in the form of questions and comments. Streaming file 1 (approximately one hour and 40 minutes). Jeff Duncan introduces himself and the program to be presented as well as the panelists: Anna Sokolow, Danny [Daniel] Nagrin, Valerie Bettis, Stuart Hodes, and Charles Weidman (who arrives late); topics discussed, at times in response to questions and comments from the audience, include: how they each first became involved in dance, including anecdotes and reminiscences of Martha Graham, Louis Horst, and Hanya Holm among others; the strong social component of early modern dance as compared with today; the development of their own, independent careers as choreographers including the influence of Louis Horst; the proliferation of modern dance techniques and overall expansion of the modern dance world; casting dance roles; dance training in academic institutions as compared to dance training outside of academia; proliferation of dance students and classes today [ends abruptly but continues on streaming file 2]. Streaming file 2 (approximately 33 minutes). Topics discussed in this portion of the recording, with considerable participation from the audience, include: the question of the dedication and commitment of today's dance students; the difficulty of finding a teacher, like Louis Horst, to act as an inspiration; problems with the teaching of dance at degree-granting institutions; the necessity of finding one's own path.
