Notes

Biographical/Historical: This print, along with *MGZFX Anon Afr 2, was an illustration to Sir Samuel White Baker's book The Albert N'yanza: Great Basin of the Nile, and explorations of the Nile sources, first published in London by Macmillan in 1866, with numerous subsequent editions. It depicts events witnessed by Baker, a British explorer, during the course of an expedition to Albert Nyanza (Lake Albert, located between present-day Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo) in 1862-1865. Both images were included in the exhibition To the Mountains of the Moon: mapping African exploration, 1541-1880, presented at the Harvey S. Firestone Memorial Library, Princeton University, in 2007.
