Content: Title and performers provided by cataloger based on handwritten notes on original cassettes and information provided by the John Cage Trust.
Content: Handwritten note on original cassette no. 1: "Duets Tape 1A - 6:40 ; Fielding Sixes 1A - 2'50". Handwritten note on original cassette no. 2: "Duets Tape 2A - 3:03 ; Fielding Sixes 2A - 2'15". Handwritten note on original cassette no. 3: "Duets Tape 3A - 2:19 ; Fielding Sixes 3A - 2'30". Handwritten note on original cassette no. 4: "Duets 4A - 3:05 ; Fielding Sixes 4A - 2'25". Handwritten note on original cassette no. 5: "Duets 5A - 4:27 ; Fielding Sixes 5A - 2'25". Handwritten note on original cassette no. 6: "Duets 6A - 2:57 ; Fielding Sixes 6A - 2'15". For reasons unidentified, the times indicated on each cassette do not correlate with the times of the streaming files.
Content: John Cage's Improvisation III, and, IV are composed for "identical cassettes in play" (John Cage Trust website, accessed May 22, 2015). The cataloger selected set 1A - 6A as the archival originals and representative set of cassettes based on best sound quality and the completeness of digital files. There are 2 additional sets of cassettes with content identical to the archival original set, respectively labeled 1B - 6B, and, 1C - 6C. The additional sets contain a different order with correlation to set A as follows: 1B = 5A, 2B = 3A, 3B = 6A, 4B = 2A, 5B = 1A, 6B = 4A, 1C = 3A, 2C = 6A, 3C = 1A, 4C = 4A, 5C = 5A, 6C = 2A.
