Description
Interview with Raven Wilkinson conducted by Jack Anderson on July 5, 1977, probably in New York City. There is a second, unidentified person present who also participates in the interview. Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 52 minutes). Raven Wilkinson speaks with Jack Anderson about her dance training as a child and adolescent; joining the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo; company members who helped her including Alexandra Danilova; some of her roles; Alicia Alonso and her coaching of the corps de ballet in dramatic technique; anecdotes about Alicia Alonso and various performances; the strong company spirit at the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo; touring with the company in the southern United States [ends abruptly but continues directly on streaming audio file 2]. Streaming audio file 2 (approximately 39 minutes). Raven Wilkinson speaks with Jack Anderson about touring in the southern United States and the racism she faced as an African-American including the threat of violence; Sergei Denham's response to the racism she encountered and his reproaches when she left the company; Nina Novak; the departure of various dancers.
