Description
The Scottish-born Robert Lenox was a very successful real estate speculator and merchant who established himself in New York City. He was considered one of the city's five richest men at the time of his death in 1839. Lenox and his wife, Rachel, were painted by John Trumbull during the artist's brief residence in New York City between 1805 and 1808, a period in which Trumbull executed almost fifty private and public commissions. The artist intended the Lenox portraits to be hung facing each other as a matched pair, and the colors and poses were chosen to complement this scheme. Trumbull frequently added columns in the background of his portraits of men as symbols of strength and honor.
